First woman named UN undersecretary-general

Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar marked International Women's Day by naming, for the first time ever, a woman undersecretary-general of the United Nations. Lucille Mair will organize an international conference the General Assembly has called for l984 on the question of Palestine. Mrs. Mair was the deputy chief delegate of Jamaica to the United Nations from 1975 to 1978 and later served as ambassador to Cuba.
