Cairo military chief warns of threat by Soviet arms

Egypt faces a "direct danger" of Soviet-backed aggression from Libya in the west and Ethiopia in the south, the armed forces chief staff said in an interview published Thursday. The official, Lt. Gen. Abdel-Halim Abu- Ghazala, told the newspaper Al-Ahram that Libya has been building a massive, Soviet-planned line of fortifications along the common border with Egypt ostensibly for defensive purposes but intended for an eventual military offensive against Egypt. In Ethiopia, he said, the Soviet Union is inciting the Marxist regime of Col. Mengitsu Haile Mariam to threaten Egypt's share of the Nile waters.
